All of our compost is made in Surry, Maine by Chickadee Compost LLC.

We do not add peat to our compost.

The best way to apply compost to your garden is to add 1-2” as a top dressing in the spring and/or fall. You can also mix it in with your topsoil, but a little bit of compost goes a long way! Compost looks like soil, but it is not soil. It is not intended to be used as a sole medium for growing, and should only be used to amend your soil.

The fine print, as required by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection:

Compost is not to be applied when soil is frozen, snow covered, or water saturated; such that the compost will be washed into surface water. Do not place compost directly into surface waters or below the groundwater table without prior approval from the Maine Department of Environmental Protection.
